There are scratches and cracks on my shungite.

Shungite is a composite rock that naturally contains various inclusions. It can be easily seen on the surface of classical (ordinary) shungite. These are mainly pyrite (light grey) and quartzite (golden), but other elements are also unevenly distributed in the stone.

The image shows traces of pyrite on an unpolished surface of shungite stone.

Pyrite and quartzite are often perceived as scratches, especially on polished surfaces. At first thought, of course, it may seem that the products were scratched during production or shipping. This misconception is understandable, since the light color on the black stone is visually deceiving. However, upon closer inspection, it is clear that these are not scratches.

On the images, you can see a pendant interspersed with quartzite.

There are naturally fine cracks in the boundaries between the various inclusions in the stone, that are positioned in different ways. Sometimes, they are located only on a small area or go through the whole stone, which has, for example, a shape of a sphere or a pyramid. Small depressions with tiny holes can often be seen in these areas as well. These places mostly look like solidified foam or lava.

These areas are not a sign of poor quality, but a sign that the stone is genuine. It is a mixture of carbon with many other elements, which is several billion years old. These special properties make the stone so powerful and effective.

Depending on whether the surface is polished, sanded or natural, the spots with inclusions are more or less visible. However, all genuine classical (ordinary) shungite stones contain inclusions that are also clearly visible upon closer inspection.

In elite shungite, these inclusions are not visible to the naked eye, even if they are present there in small quantities. However, they have obviously been completely mixed with shungite under the influence of high temperature and pressure. They can be recognized only when elite shungite is immersed into the water. After a while, mainly orange spots appear, which are caused by the processes of oxidation of additional elements.

Please do not try to treat surfaces anyhow. This can quickly lead to abrasion of the polish on the polished stones. As a result, the surface loses its luster.
